Game Review: Rive

At first I thought Rive was a simple 2D twin stick shooter with some platforming parts and I thought it'd be fun enough. After playing it here and there the last few days I can say it is partially that. It is a simple arcade style game where you control a spider robot pilot and do various things that pays homages to some classic titles like Gradius. It also adds some things like hacking AI to do various things, like one that can heal you or one that can shoot along with you as well as other things. You also collect bolts to upgrade your spider robot weapons and abilities.

Rive is full of references.

The game plays well, but I would be lying if I said I didn't get frustrated at the game at times for the randomness of item drops. The default option in the game is "Hard Mode" but you can switch it to a "Soft Mode" at any time. I was offered this option once after dying multiple times to the same boss, but I didn't take it and so I take part of the blame. The game also offers a built in "Speed Run" mode and a self explanatory "One Credit" mode.

Overall I had a great time playing through the game, but I would say if you are just looking for fun you should REALLY just play through it on Soft Mode to save your sanity at times. Worth the asking price (14.99 as of the writing of this review.
